Lukewarm Food/Frosty Staff: I am writing to detail my bad experience with the China King Buffet on University Ave, Charlottetown this past Wednesday (June 20). I should point out every other aspect of our visit (Cavendish Country Inn and Cottages, Fisherman’s Wharf, etc ) went well and, because of our frequent visits, one poor experience will not affect whether or not we return. It could, however, affect both first time visitors and the health of patrons at this restaurant if something was amiss.

I had gone in the restaurant just after 11:30 (while my wife was shopping at the Charlottetown Mall) to see if it was a lunch possibility. The buffet was out and there were no customers. We returned around 12:15. There were only two customers then so I suspect it was the same food I saw our 45 minutes earlier. I started with a small sampler plate. Most of the items were lukewarm at best (eg. Onion rings, eggrolls, chicken balls). Many of the items on my wife’s plate were also not hot. I tried a second plate. The vegetable dishes were warm but the meat dishes (which had included meatballs were not).

A couple of months ago, there was an e-coli (food poisoning) outbreak in Miramichi, New Brunswick resulting in widespread (negative) media coverage. The source was thought to be a restaurant. Shortly after (I am on my village’s Emergency Response Committee), I was part of a group who had a presentation from the District Medical Health Officer on food illnesses and poisoning. She noted food at buffets that had set for a long time without proper heating or cooling was often the cause.

I asked the server to speak to the manager to express our dissatisfaction and concern. He went to the buffet and returned saying his heaters were turned on full. I pointed out the issue was the food ON MY PLATE was lukewarm and the setting of his heaters really didn’t matter if it did not keep the food hot. (IThe manager’s response reminded me of that awful line – “Well aside from that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?”).

Because we were not happy with our meals and ate far less than we would have if not worried about food poisoning, I told the server when she gave us our FULL bill that was not right. She (who was also cashier) abruptly told me we ordered two meals and would be charged for two meals. I noted this (ie. lukewarm – possibly unsafe - food) was wrong and she would hear about this. In response, she told me (and this was really quite offensive) not to do anything (to the restaurant, I presume) because they had cameras (pointing behind her). In other words, she was implying I was going to “damage” the restaurant in retaliation (which I found quite offensive!). Given I paid by credit card (so could easily be identified) she obviously was implying I was stupid, too.

So, we were subjected to:

1) Lukewarm food and the health danger that presents
2) Frustrating response from the manager
3) Nasty treatment from the server/cashier

I won't be back!!
