Wonderful Surprise of a Restaurant: On a Friday evening, 23 October 2009, while en route to the cottage, my wife and I stopped for a "restaurant meal" - hoping that it would be decent food (which can be tricky, for my wife is an excellent cook). Few patrons were in the "Grill on the Gull" - it is in Minden, ON, after all.
The Caesar salad was actually better than either I myself make, or the one that my best friend makes. It was at once different, and by far superior! That alone would be worth the trip! That alone will cause us to eat there again!
My wife's escargot was nice. She really likes escargot, and this version was quite good, she said.
My penne - with Italian sausage - was absolutely wonderful. Just a touch of heat (I added some hot peppers just because...), it had lots of sauce and the sauce was extremely tasty. We both tried each others pasta; we both agreed that this penne was fabulous.
My wife's pasta (specific menu name escapes me), she thought was excellent, I thought had too woodsy a taste. It had mushrooms in it, and a powerful mushroom taste to it. For those who like mushrooms, this would have been a treat. It was a treat for my wife. Not my "cup of tea".
The restaurant is not fancy. The kitchen (chief and assistant) can be seen through a large open window from the main dining area. Customers could, if they wished to do so, talk to the chief by raising their voice slightly.
We both were a tad chilled by the weather outside and by the rain, and I found it hard to warm up in the restaurant. Mind, we were not warmly dressed, either. But the place was not overly heated.
This is a restaurant we will return to eat at in the future, of that, there is no doubt.
