Great Service! Good Food! Nice atmosphere!: A friend and I popped into Sushi Sugar today because our original destination was closed on Tuesday. Go figure.
The front of the restaurant was welcoming and clearly OPEN. It was clean and well-presented.
The inside had the traditional Japanese feel to it. Dark wood, noren curtains, cozy booths (traditional to North American Japanese anyway!).
My friend and I were greeted immediately upon entering and welcomed inside to sit where we wanted. We were warned of lots of students coming in, shortly. I appreciated the forewarning.
We were served a hearty genmaicha in brightly coloured mugs with handles (not used to handles in a sushi place). I didn't mind the shape, though and the tea was yummy.
The menu is rather simple. We were there at lunch. I don't know if there's another menu for lunch. The high school kids all seemed to be ordering tonkatsu or some sort of sushi.
My friend ordered gyoza, miso soup, and the Crazy Roll. I ordered tempura udon.
We were presented with a tasty salad with self-proclaimed homemade dressing, by our server (and I'm guessing proprietor by the good-natured interrogation we got about WHY we were in his restaurant).
His gyoza came next and he seemed to be enjoying them. The soup looked alright. I didn't get to try his.
My udon arrived warm and steamy as it should be. I was also given some Japanese chili bits to season my udon with, the cap popped off before my very eyes and left on the table, graciously. Such service!
The broth was good. Flavourful, tasty. It wasn't Tempura Udon like I'd ordered, but chicken udon isn't a terrible way to die. Still, I would've liked what I'd ordered and didn't want to wait for another bowl of soup.
All in all, great service, good food, nice atmosphere.
4 out of 5 stars for the order jumble.
