far from "Mexican": Little Mexico Cantina claims on their website:

"These are families who cook the same food as their mothers and grandmothers — a menu is inspired by the cooking of northern Mexico and southern California."

I spent 25 years of my life in Southern California, and the food served at this restaurant resembled nothing I had ever experienced at countless Mexican restaurants throughout Southern California and U.S. border states, such as Arizona.

I was pleased, however, to be served the traditionally complimentary chips and salsa, and not terribly surprised to find the salsa uncharacteristically mild. It was comprised only of chunks of very very lightly flavored stewed tomatoes, topped with a sprig of cilantro. it was tasty and juicy.:)

My husband and I ordered the chicken fajitas and Mexican pizza. The chicken was chunky and tender, but very bland under the sauce that dressed it, which was more like the sweet and sour sauce one might find in a Chinese restaurant. A small dollop of cheese, sour cream, and "guacamole" accompanied the "fajitas," but the "guacamole" was just mashed avocado- no spices, onions, tomatoes, etc.. All in all, edible, but not worth 12.95. As for the Mexican pizza, the menu description was this:

"MEXICAN PIZZA - Best in town! 10" thin crispy crust covered with mole sauce, chorizo. Feta & Jack cheese, onions, tomatoes and sasame seeds."

What I got was thin cripsy crust topped with mole sauce, a tiny sprinkling of what actually looked like cheddar and jack cheeses, garnished with a little bit of chorizo. Completely absent were the onions, tomatoes, and sesame seeds, although, there was a sparse scattering of green onion slices across the pizza. The flavor was decent, but not at all substantial enough to be worth 10.95.

When someone that I'm thinking was the owner came by to ask, "how is everything?" i replied that i expected a bit more for my money. She just shrugged me off, mumbling something like, "this is how we've done it for years..." Later she asked if we enjoyed the chips and salsa, stating that no one serves a free appetizer. Ha. Complimentary chips n salsa are pretty much standard!

If you're looking for a very bland, slight resemblance to Mexican food, and are not that concerned about value for price, give this restaurant a try. It won't make you sick, and maybe we just ordered the wrong things.
