This is the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in: Tonight I was congratulated by the chef in the Lotus Thai restaurant in St Thomas for being the first customer to complain in three years. It was also the worst culinary experience I have ever had. How could their food and service go so spectacularly wrong? Here is my account:

It was my wife's birthday and we decided to try somewhere new. We both enjoy Thai food and have had a few good experiences, though neither of us would claim to be an expert on Thai cooking. We were quite early, having arrived just before 5 pm, and were the only seated customers. Our server promptly brought our menus and got us drinks. My wife ordered a combo of assorted prawn and spring rolls and Pad Thai and I ordered a large Tom Yum soup (for us to share) and Thai red curry with rice. The server arrived with two bowls that felt like they had been in a freezer and the starters quickly followed. No sooner had we begun eating than our main courses were set before us with the excuse that there was no room in the kitchen owing to their busyness with telephone orders. As my soup had almost instantly turned cold, I switched my attention the entrée. This was not red curry. This dish had virtually none of the spicy fragrance and sumptuous aromatic flavours one would expect to find in a red curry. This tasted like cat food and was utterly unpalatable. I complained to the server and asked if I could instead have the Pad Thai as my wife thought her entrée was ok. My dish was removed without a word and several minutes later the server arrived while speaking on the telephone and rudely threw the dish in front of me, again without so much as a word. I could not believe it, the noodles were not thoroughly cooked and were like chewing on rubber bands. My wife tried them and agreed that my Pad Thai was nothing like hers. When I complained again the chef came out of the kitchen. He rudely congratulated me on being the only customer to complain in three years and informed me that I was no longer welcome in his restaurant. He also insisted that I pay for one of the entrees I had ordered owing to the wastage of his ingredients. This restaurant does not appear to care about either the standard of their food or the quality of their service. The telephone customer would appear to be their main (if not their only) concern. In my opinion the food in this restaurant is about as authentic as the (plastic) flowers on their tables and the standard of service is the worst I have ever experienced.
