How to make money in a recession if you are a mechanic - Part 2: I will just add to the experience Nicole had.

Took my car in with a muffler, and hand brake problem. Quote - sit down everyone - $1462.

Muffler was around $1000 and the rest for the hand brake. This was for a beat up 99 Jetta. Of course, I didn’t allow them to touch the car at that point and I picked it up that after-noon.

Took the car to my mechanic in North York (i really wanted to avoid the drive, but can't trust anyone now a days) and the repairs are as follow:

Muffler - $60 parts and labor (metal piece needed to be patched).
Hand Brake - cable needed to be replaced ($25), labor - $35. Total $60
Total cost: $120 V.S. $1462 - Now you be the judge of that. I know recession has hit hard but this is outrageous. This was a lesson for me, and I hope more people read this.

On top of everything my radiator’s started leaking, right after I took the car from them. Coincidence? Not sure anymore..

How to make money in a recession if you are a mechanic: I have come to Speedy in Oakville to get the brakes on my car changed. I asked the owner how much he estimates the repair would cost. I got a verbal quote from him while he claimed that his computer does not print estimates. I re-confirmed the price and as it was acceptable I asked for the work to be carried out. Within an hour I got a call from the owner asking twice the amount of money for the same job. When I said that this is not what we agreed on, he explained that I don't have to get the work done there, but I have to pay him $50 or he will retain my car under the 'mechanics act'.

I immediately started calling around to find out what to do with this, as I really didn't want to supplement the businesses falling revenues with my cash for no reason whatsoever. I called other mechanics and even the police over this. The advice I got from most people was to pay the 'ransom' and get the car out of that particular garage asap, as it apparently has a reputation and getting off with only a $50 loss is actually a good thing in this case.

By the way, amongst others I called another Speedy garage not to far from here and their estimate was 27% lower on the exact same job.

To be fair, I have to update my comments today - the day after the above took place:

I got to the shop first thing in the morning. The owner was there, he asked me how I was and then asked me to wait a minute that he will bring the car outside the garage. He did so and when he returned to the office he passed me the keys and told me to have a nice day. I thanked him and left the shop.

I dare to assume that he read my comments on here last night. It is possible that he realized the $50 were not really worth it if I was going to share my story with everyone.

In conclusion all I have to say is that I truly wish he had been more open to communication in the first place. I would have been more than happy to call the situation a misunderstanding and to come back to the same shop with other repairs as they might pop up in the future. Most times using common courtesy and friendly attitude as means of retaining customers is more powerful then thousands of advertising Dollars spent on finding new ones. I will not be going back there any time soon, but I would not necessarily discourage others from doing so. Just be careful and make sure you get a written estimate before you hand your keys (and the right to hold your car for ransom) over the counter.
