Reviews
Tons of books: I have been to Sunrise books several times and always find something unique and special when I go. It is difficult to sort through the stacks of books so make sure you have plenty of time to shop. The gentleman that works there goes out of his way to help with anything I'm looking for. If I ask for something they can usually find it soon. Always a pleasure to shop there!

Abusive staff: I have been into the store a total of 3 times. Once years ago, again 2 weeks ago, when a male employee was working, and then today.

I have NEVER felt compelled to write a review before, so this is an example of how greatly offended I am.
My mother and I went in today, to sell a few books we no longer need, and pick up a bunch more (I planned on purchasing as many of the GOOSEBUMPS collection as I could get my hands on). My mom put her books on the counter for a brief moment and i strolled back into the teen section. When I got there, the foot stool I had used as a seat last time (as the books I want are very close to the ground and I have bad knees) was waiting there with a medium sized box on it. I lightly placed the box beside the stool (as it was blocking the books I needed anyways, and then moved the stool and sat down. An instant later, the woman came out of the back door right beside me, and in a very accusatory tone said, "What are you doing?" Shocked I said, "looking at books." As she walked passed me she lightly kicked the box I had moved a whopping 2 inches to the left, and said, "you moved this?!" and continued to walk away. I literally sat there in shock, unable to move or respond.
My shock quickly turned to anger when I heard her start to use more accusatory tone and attitude towards my mother near the front of the store. I marched down the aisle and told my mother I wanted to leave. The lady said bye, to which I ignored, but turned to my mother and said, "I don't want to buy anything from someone with that attitude. What a b@!%h!" loud enough for her to hear.

I am EXTREMELY passive, and polite to a fault, so for me to say that to someone running a shop, is extreme. I have never EVER walked out of a store under such circumstances and will now be looking for a less abusive book shop. I'd rather pay a little more to order online than be harassed after driving from the far south end of town to the far north, just to be verbally assaulted.

serious concerns: Our experience echos that of the Book Nazis review. We visited with friends who have a lot of experience with such outlets. It was made absolutely clear to us that unless we already new the title and simply asked for it to be retrieved that our presence was not wanted. When we did ask to look at some titles that were out of reach the attendant smashed a ladder hard against the books in order to climb up and read titles. We immediately lost interest.

We walked away from at least two other possible purchases as it was clearly to much trouble to properly examine the books.

The collection is best described as a private warehouse appropriate for supporting mail-order.

Our friends had visited the store a number of years ago with a much better experience, but have resolved not to return until there is evidence that things have changed substantially.

Book Nazis (Well, at least the WOMAN): Although this store has an enormous stock - probably the largest in the area - a lot of it is laid out on the floors between the stacks. The books on the floor are stacked high and deep, preventing you from seeing both the books on the shelves and those found within the stacks on the floor. If you chance to move anything to see what's behind it, you get scolded from the staff - in particular, the older woman who I believe is the wife of the owner. The owner is quite quiet and reserved...better than his nazi of a wife. She really is miserable and hates if you want to serve (browse) yourself.

Please understand that I appreciate order - I am a librarian, for goodness sakes. I love books and I would actually like to be able to see/find them on my own. I also put things back. However, the woman frowns upon you touching any of the stock.

I have tried on countless occasions to give this store a chance. Usually, I am overwhelmed by the stock on the floor, which makes it inaccessible. However, it is the service that is the reason that I will never go back. I have discussed this with other book-loving / librarian friends and they agree. Lots of books, awful service.
