Kennel Cough: I have been using Country Pet Resort for over 10 years and have found that they deliver exceptional service. Super clean facility, utmost care for all your animals. I have had them look after both my dogs and cats. Kennel Cough is a cold which is very contagious. It is like taking you child to school and he comes home with a cold. Are you going to bad mouth that school. It is too bad that you kicked up such a stink and got your parents involved over a cold that your dog got at a kennel. In doing so you just got kicked out of the best kennel in this area. I have tried several over the years and Country Pet Resort is the Best in my opinion.

Kennel Cough: DO NOT GO TO COUNTRY PET RESORT

We recently had our dogs stay at the Country Pet Resort north of Carleton Place. Our flight home was due to arrive late at night so we had arranged for my parents, who have also boarded their dogs there in the past, to pick them up for us. When we picked up our dogs from my parents the next day they informed us that both had been coughing and hacking. One developed a violent cough the following day.

Sunday night we emailed the kennel to ask if they had noticed any issues with the dogs during their stay, and informed them of their symptoms. When I reached them and explained the situation the first advice offered was to avoid the veterinarian. The owner then went on to explain that there was a dog in the kennel that had been coughing, and who had been vaccinated for Kennel Cough too soon prior to boarding. They had given the dog a cough suppressant, but did not seek medical care or separate it from the other dogs. They did not offer any apologies for failing to maintain a safe environment for our dogs, or for failing to notify us that they had been exposed to a sick dog in the kennel. What was particularly disturbing was that they did not notify my parents, despite knowing that our possibly contaminated dogs would be spending some time in my parent’s home with their dogs immediately after leaving the kennel. We were not upset about the outbreak; we are aware that vaccinations are not 100% effective. We were, however, disturbed by their failure to separate the sick dog and seek medical attention for it, their failure to inform their customers of the possibility of infection, their unapologetic attitude, and their failure to take responsibility for not providing a safe environment for our dogs. We have brought our dog to the veterinarian, and the virus was diagnosed as Kennel Cough.

In the end they informed us that they did not need our business and our dogs were not welcome there anymore. They also contacted my parents, who at this point were unaware of this situation, and informed them that their dogs were not welcome at the Country Pet Resort, and that they were cancelling their reservation for the March Break, leaving my parents confused and scrambling to find alternate accommodations for one of the busiest periods of the year. It is just as well, as neither we nor they would ever board our pets there again. I sincerely hope that they have told others about the outbreak in their kennel, as informing their customers would have been the least that they could do. I also hope that the owner of the dog that was sick first was notified so they could seek medical attention after retrieving their pet.

The owners were extremely rude and I will never go back. Nor will I ever recommend a kennel that fails to keep their pets in a safe environment, or to properly disclose issues that occur while your pets are there.
