This neighborhood has changed dramatically over the years. Originally a Jewish community, it became home to Portuguese and other European immigrants, and then changed again as the bordering Chinatown expanded at the same time shopkeepers from the Caribbean, the Middle East, and elsewhere arrived. This colorful, lively area should not be missed. You'll hear Caribbean, Portuguese, Italian, and many other languages and dialects as merchants spread out their wares.
