Steer Clear: Buyer Beware: Unless you have a large amount of money these real estate agents will do nothing for you.

I resided in a property owned by Martin Skolnick of DTZ Barnicke (luckily only for one year) and my experience was far from good. My roommate and I were Queen's University Nursing Students who signed the lease in February of 2012. Skolnick purchased the property and neighbouring property in April of 2012 in hopes of creating large scale condominiums. He also intended, and tried, to pressure my roommate and I into voiding our lease so he could start construction early.

My roommate and I told Skolnick that we could not simply move out of our residence (as I am from out of province, and she is from London we had no where else to go) without him providing us with another. His made only one attempt to do such, by asking us to move 30 minutes walk away into an apartment with double the rent we were currently paying. When we refused Skolnick's offer he refused to answer most of our communication.

When we moved into the property there was a large leak in the hallway flooring, and a large amount of mold and water leak damager in one of the bedrooms. We informed Skolnick of this promptly yet it took 3 months for him to send anyone to try and fix the damages. Eventually Skolnick informed us that he had spent enough money on the unit and would not be investigating further.

Later on in the year our washer and dryer broke in the middle of winter. My roommate informed Skolnick of this, and also told him that the water leak in her room had worsened. Skolnick refused to reply to any communication regarding the damaged; however he did reply to an email sent days later regarding rent receipts.

During a particularly cold spell in April (the weather was below 0) our heating ceased to function. As a solution Skolnick provided us with two small, space heaters without offering to compensate for the added utilities.

Skolnick also would show up randomly and without warning throughout the term of the lease, including a final visit on April 28th (two days prior to the lease ending) when he complained that we had yet to moved out and stated "I'm not making any trips to the dump, so you better have the apartment cleared"

All and all this was the worst experience with a landlord I have encountered. He used his position of power to intimidate my roommate and I, and refused to comply with the Residential Tenancies Act as well as common decency on multiple occasions.

I cannot speak for DTZ Barnicke as a whole as I only encountered Skolnick but my advice is stay clear.
